Winery Biography's
Alex’s Red Barn
Winery The
new kid on the block is Alex’s Red Barn Winery having just opened in
September, 2004. This is a boutique winery producing some of their four
wines from 40-year-old vines originally planted by the Kaiser Corporation.
The wines are Johannisberg Riesling, Sauvugnon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon
and a Cream Sherry that is produced using the traditional “Solera” method.
Alex’s Red Barn hosts a tasting room and outdoor patio area where you can
have a delightful conversation with the owners/wine makers Lise and Alex
Yakut. This is a hands-on
operation and just a side note from this writer, not being a sherry
drinker, after tasting this Cream Sherry I am now! Take
note, next year they will be introducing a Muscat
Canelli.
Baily Vineyard
and
Winery Owned by Phil and Carol Baily, the Baily winery got its humble beginnings in 1981 when the couple purchased a home and acreage in the Temecula wine country. They began growing grapes on one acre of land and the following year added six more acres. In 1986 the Baily Winery became a reality. The vineyards now encompass over sixty acres of varietal grapes and produce many award winning wines. The Winery hosts a wine tasting room, gift shop and Baily’s Café. Among the award-winning wines that are available for you to enjoy and order on- line are the Gold Medal Winner 2002 Montage, Bronze Medal Winner 2002 Riesling, Gold Medal Winner 2002 Muscat Blanc, Silver Medal Winner 1998 Meritage and the Silver Medal Winner 2000 Serenity, a late harvest wine.
Bella Vista/ Cilurzo Vineyard and
Winery This winery was known until recently as Cilurzo Vineyard and Winery. It was founded by Vincenzo Cilurzo. He was the first to plant a vineyard in Temecula in 1968. Mr. Cilurzo has sold the winery, hence the name change to Bella Vista Cilurzo. Only the name has changed, not the quality of wines produced by this fine winery. They have a crush capacity of 250 tons and produce many award winning wines. Among the awards are their Gold Medal and Best of Class at the West Coast Wine Competition 2002 Vognier, Gold Medal, Best of Class and Best Wine of South Coast Region 2002 Late Harvest Petite Sirah, and their 2001 Petite Sirah Reserve, winner of a Gold, 2 Silver, and 4 Bronze Medals.
Callaway Coastal Winery Originally founded in 1968 by Ely Callaway, then president of Burlington Industries of New York, with 105 acres, followed in 1981 with the purchase of 170 acres known as Vignes Hills Vineyard. It was also sold to Hiram Walker in the same year. The vineyard was expanded again in 1987 with the acquisition of Bell Vineyards, which added an additional 400 acres. At this time the vineyards and winery became part of Allied Domecq, an international food and beverage firm from the United Kingdom. Today Callaway is making wines at what they call their three tiers of wine. The first is Calloway Coastal Wines, with 5 different bottlings, including 3 whites and 2 reds. The next is Callaway Coastal Reserve with 4 bottlings, 2 reds and 2 whites. The last is the Callaway Coastal Special Collection.
Churon Winery Churon Winery is a beautiful French Chateau set in the hills of Temecula. It hosts a 22 room bed and breakfast, restaurant, gift shop and wine tasting room. This winery specializes in premium and estate wines, bottling 4,000 cases. They produce 2 whites, a rose and 5 reds.
Falkner
Winery Falkner Winery is located in the former Temecula Crest Winery. Ray and Loretta Falkner opened their doors in July, 2000. They currently produce 12 different wines, host a wine tasting room and a gift shop. To those adventurous souls to the “Wine County”, this winery offers free jazz on Sundays and classes on learning about wine, which includes wine tasting.
Filsinger
Vineyard and Winery Filsinger Vineyard and Winery was first opened in 1980, six years after Dr. Bill Filsinger and his late wife Kathy purchased thirty-five acres in the Temecula Valley. Having retired from his medical practice in 1997, he has become an award winning winemaker. He was also the first winemaker in the valley to produce Gewurztraminer, a wine that was produced by his ancestors in Germany. In 1986 the winery started producing sparkling wines using the “methode champenoise”. It is also the only winery in the valley to produce Orange Muscat, a delicious, refreshing dessert wine. This winery is still family owned and operated. It hosts a homey, friendly tasting room.
Keyways Winery and
Vineyard Originally founded in 1990 by Carl Keys, it is now owned and operated by Don and JoAnn Frangipani. Don Frangipani is also the winemaker. This winery is located off the beaten path of the other valley wineries. It is set back in a pleasant country setting complete with horses and their corrals. The production of the 2003 Sauvignon Blanc was so excellent that it has sold out and they continue to get calls daily requesting this bottling. This winery is one of my favorites due to the excellent wine and the ambiance.
